It’s Been a Long, Slow Collision
You can watch the new Cardigans video, lovingly entitled, “I Need Some Fine Wine, and You, You Need to be Nicer,” HERE. After three sugary pop albums, one dark electronic album, and one folk, campfire song album, it’s interesting to see that The Cardigans are — and I’m basing this one the one single I have heard — exploring yet another subgenre of pop music. The video is very exciting, and I especially enjoyed Nina’s writhing on the floor and cooing, “Sit. Good dog. Stay” The animal metaphor is very charming. The video is somehow evocative of a Swedish candy commercial. Or something.
I am really enjoying Franz Ferdinand‘s new release, especially since I wrote a research paper on the guy in 8th grade. Or, uh, nevermind. You know, the song “Eleanor Put Your Boots On” sounds a LOT like The Kinks. Am I alone in thinking this?
And speaking of Scottish bands, did you know that Nazareth‘s sentimental and sweet ballad “Love Hurts,” is actually an Everly Brothers cover? What has two thumbs and didn’t realize that until recently? This guy [points to myself]. In any event, take a listen. Which one do you prefer? I think both versions are pretty amazing.
Fun songs I have recently discovered / rediscovered:
Nine Inch Nails, “The Hand That Feeds”
Cloud Room, “Hey Now Now”
Dead 60s, “Riot Radio”
Trans X, “Living on Video”
Frankie Goes to Hollywood, “Relax (Sex Mix)”
One late, late night a few weeks ago on VH1 Classics I caught the very eerie, and absolutely hilarious, video for Blue Öyster Cult’s “Joan Crawford.” You MUST find this video, or at least listen to the song. It’s truly a gem. It almost tops “Burning for You” (one of my personal BOC favorites). Almost. For a little sample of the, uh, bizarre tune, check out the lyrics HERE.
I have also been listening to a lot of Saint Etienne.
You can also check out the leaked Strokes tune, “The Other Side,” HERE. To be honest, it doesn’t seem like the Strokes’ members have really been exploring their instruments. I mean, I loved the album “Is This It?” but the new single doesn’t sound terribly different. I would have liked for them to do something a little more advanced, but hey, it’s a free country, not to mention my guitar skills are limited to Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water,” Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love,” and The Cure’s “Why Can’t I Be You” (which is nothing to sneeze at, though, thank you), but still, I’m just going to go air guitar along to Phil Collins’ “Something Happened on the Way to Heaven” now.
You can run, but you can’t hide, but I’m not leavin’ unless you come with me…

Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris also did a wonderful version of “Love Hurts.” I was open-mouthed when I first heard it. Like you, I only knew it through the Nazareth version; who knew there was such a fragile and remorseful song underneath?
